knightoftheswan: (okay so maybe he does like princess tutu)

"Shall we dance?"

Tutu makes no attempt to hide her surprise at Lohengrin's proposition. After a moment, she accepts his offered hand and he escorts her to the ballroom floor.

The dance is similar to the first one they shared, another waltz with a closeness between the two much like when they danced in the courtyard. Yes, it's odd how friendships sometimes find expression.

The knight leans close to the princess's ear. Tutu reacts with a quiet gasp and tightening in his hold at such intimacy.

"Don't stop smiling," he whispers to her, though she wasn't, "but there is a witch in our midst, Tutu."

He straightens back up and she tilts her head to follow his look. They spy Siegfried speaking with a woman in a rich red dress, the better to match her eyes.

"Her?" the princess quietly asks, only slightly relaxing.

Lohengrin nods, his face dissonant compared to his words, "I would recognize those eyes anywhere. That is the same witch who fanned my Elsa's curiosity. I've told you how that turned out."

Tutu grimly nods back.

"Be cheerful," he softly commands. "Dour expressions at a ball call attention."

"But what is she doing here?"

"She had been banished from Heinrich's kingdom after her connection to the Raven and her part in Elsa's death were exposed. Lot of gall hiding here, though."

The knight turns the princess around and dips her with a cheerful laugh. A giggle escapes the girl's lips, caught off guard by his acting.

Siegfried, too, is caught off guard by their actions and looks their way with a twinge in his amber eyes. The woman by him is quick to bring his attention back to herself, however.

"She will suspect something if I approach," Lohengrin says. "She'll also suspect something if you approach immediately after dancing with me. Switch partners a couple of times and then ask Siegfried to dance. I'll keep an eye on her."

"H-hey! Don't I get a say in this?" Tutu asks, flustered.

"Have you a better plan? She's already spending too much time with Siegfried. I'm sure you'd agree with that assessment."

Tutu's face flushes crimson.

"How can you tell?" she hisses.

"How do you think?" he replies, briefly turning their joined hands to show her his wedding band.

The princess looks at the knight with soft eyes and a slight frown. It never ceases to amaze him how much she feels.

"Don't give me that look," he says as the song ends. "And remember, two more partners before Siegfried. I'll keep an eye on both of you in case that witch decides to start something."

At the final notes, Lohengrin bows and kisses the back of Tutu's hand. They then part, the knight off to "mingle" while the princess finds her next partner.

As it is, neither of them had any reason to worry.

"Princess Tutu," Siegfried says, bowing before her and giving his own kiss on top of the lingering touch of the knight. "I would like nothing more this evening than to dance with you."

She briefly glances over his shoulder, where Lohengrin stood looking back over his own shoulder. He responds to her silent question with a smooth half-shrug. If Siegfried wants to dance with her, their job is essentially complete.

Tutu gives the prince a bright smile and a nod. Siegfried gestures to the musicians and a new song starts.

Then another. And another. And yet another, as the crowd continues to watch the prince and princess dance, spellbound.

Lohengrin watches with satisfaction as the red-eyed woman takes her leave of the ball. He would be more satisfied, however, if he knew for certain whether the woman's smile was as genuine as his own.
